LipiFlow is a novel treatment device for meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye syndrome. The meibomian glands are responsible for producing an oil layer to the tears that prevents the tears from evaporating. If the meibomian glands become obstructed oil will not flow from them, causing dry eye symptoms. The LipiFlow activator opens obstructed meibomian glands by gently warming the inside of the eyelids while applying light pulsatile pressure to the outer eyelids to remove hardened oils. This restores normal function to the meibomian glands and relieves dry eye symptoms.
Lipiflow is recommended for individuals with obstructed meibomian glands. This is best described as meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). MGD is the leading cause of dry eye and is a significant contributor to contact lens intolerance. Our clinic has a special device called LipiScan to image the meibomian glands to know if an individual has lost meibomian glands due to obstruction.
